MEDIA ADVISORY September 16, 2002 Spaulding Rehab to Host Set Sail 2002 Annual Benefit Will Support Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program WHAT: Don't miss this photo opportunity! Come see Spaulding Rehab's new pier on the Charles River and witness the competitive spirit of Spaulding staffers! As the finale to National Rehab Awareness Week, Spaulding employees will compete in an outrigger canoe competition during the benefit for its Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program. You will have a chance to meet and greet Mayor Thomas M. Menino, actress Marianne Leone of The Sopranos, and "Car Talk Guys" Tom and Ray Magliozzi. The event will include boating and family activities for attendees in addition to an auction, barbecue, and dancing. Josiah Spaulding Jr., president and CEO of The Wang Center, will serve as the guest auctioneer. Julie Harris, Tony Award-winning stage actress, is the honorary chair. Tickets are $100 per person in advance and $125 per person at the door. Children under 16 will be admitted free. Casual attire. (Rain date: Sunday, September 29, 2002) LOCATION: On the Pier at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital 125 Nashua Street Boston, MA BACKGROUND: The Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program allows those with disabilities to participate in activities including windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, and rowing on the Charles River. Spaulding is dedicated to helping patients achieve maximum function through rehabilitation. While traditional forms of therapy form the core of rehabilitation, patients gain the confidence and skills to pursue and enjoy recreational activities even after serious illnesses and injuries.
